Objectives:We studied the efficacy and safety of sildenafil in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Methods:We conducted a single-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study of sildenafil (Viagra®) in men with erectile dysfunction (ED) secondary to ED related to other causes and with other conditions. Efficacy was evaluated in patients with ED secondary to other causes with the primary outcome of change in the Erectile Function Index (EFIA). The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee for Chinese People's Hospital (approval number: XTDH-0007-02-8). The study was conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. Informed consent was obtained prior to the study's authorization and by signing of the informed consent form. Results:Of 972 patients with ED secondary to other causes, mean age was 45±7 years (range: 23-63 years). There were 437 (60.6%) men with ED secondary to other causes and 3 (1.6%) men with ED secondary to other conditions. Patients with ED secondary to ED related to other conditions had significantly higher EFIA scores (mean: 2.6±0.8) than those with ED secondary to ED related to other conditions (mean: 2.1±0.8). Sildenafil was associated with a significantly lower frequency of ED secondary to other causes (26% vs. 16%; P=0.023).
Conclusion:Sildenafil was well tolerated and showed good efficacy and safety profile in the treatment of ED secondary to other causes. We also noted that sildenafil has a similar safety profile to other drugs used in ED.
